What is SettleTab?
SettleTab helps friends, housemates and travel groups split shared costs. Scan a receipt, tap who had what, and SettleTab works out what everyone owes, including their share of tax and service. When it is time to settle up, it suggests the fewest payments.
Can I use it without an account?
Yes. You can start on your own device without signing in, add friends who have not joined yet, and split expenses. Your data stays on your device. To scan receipts, share a group with friends or use SettleTab on more than one device, sign in with Google, Apple or email. Your on-device groups move into your account when you do.
Do my friends need the app?
No. You can add friends to a group before they join, and keep track of what they owe. When you want them to see the group, share the invite link. It opens in any web browser, so they can join without installing anything. They sign in once to join.
Scanning receipts#
How does the receipt scan work?
Take a photo or pick one from your gallery, crop it, and SettleTab reads the items, prices, tax and total for you. A receipt can have up to 5 pages. Always check the items before you save, because AI can misread a blurry or crumpled receipt. If a scan fails, you can type the items in instead.
Where are my receipt images sent?
The photo is uploaded to your group's secure storage on Google Firebase. Our server checks that you are in that group, then sends the photo to Google Gemini to read the text. The photo is shown only to members of your group, and we do not use it for ads. Google handles it under the Gemini API terms. Read the Privacy Policy for details.
Is there a limit on scans?
SettleTab is free with no daily limits on groups, members or expenses. To keep AI scanning free for everyone, there is a fair-use cap of 60 scans per account in any 24 hours. You can always type items in by hand.
Splitting and settling#
How is tax split?
You choose, for each receipt. Proportional splits tax and service in line with what each person ordered, so someone who had more pays more tax. Equal splits them evenly between everyone on the receipt. Discounts are always shared in line with what each person ordered, and are taken off before service and tax are worked out.
Can I split one item between some people?
Yes. Tap the people who shared an item and SettleTab divides it between them. For items with a quantity of 2 or more, you can split the quantity too, for example 3 plates shared by the table and 2 for one person.
What are "fewest payments"?
When a group has many expenses, people can end up owing each other in circles. Fewest payments works out the smallest set of payments that clears every balance, so the group settles up with as few transfers as possible.
Does SettleTab move money?
No. SettleTab never moves money. It records who owes whom. You pay each other in cash, by bank transfer or in your own payment app, then record the payment in SettleTab so balances stay correct. You can add your payment QR codes to your profile so friends can pay you faster.
Which currencies does SettleTab support?
More than 150 currencies. Each group has a main currency, and you can add an expense or payment in a different one. SettleTab converts it at the exchange rate of the day and saves that rate with the expense, so the numbers do not change later.
Groups and privacy#
Who can see my expenses?
Only the members of the group. Everyone in a group can see its expenses, payments, receipt photos and balances, and the edit history of each expense. Nobody outside the group can see them.
Can I keep an expense out of the balances?
Yes. Mark an expense or payment as excluded from balances. It stays in the group's records but does not change what anyone owes.
Accounts and data#
Can I import from Splitwise?
Yes. Export your group from Splitwise as a CSV file, then choose Import in SettleTab. The file is read on your device and never uploaded. You can match each Splitwise person to a group member, and anyone left over is added as a friend who has not joined yet.
How do I export my data?
Open a group's menu and choose Export as CSV, or share its balances or an insights report as a PDF.
How do I delete my data?
Go to your profile and choose Delete account. It happens right away and cannot be undone. Your profile and sign-in are deleted, and so are groups where you are the only member. In shared groups, expenses you were part of stay so your friends' balances remain correct. If you use SettleTab without an account, leaving that mode erases your on-device data.
Pricing#
Is SettleTab free?
Yes. Groups, members, expenses, receipt scanning under fair use, item-by-item splitting, settling up, payment QR codes, CSV and PDF export, Splitwise import, using SettleTab without an account, and logging expenses in any currency are all free. There are no ads.
Will that change?
SettleTab is free. If we ever add a paid plan, we will say so here first. The features listed above will stay free.
